Albany, N.Y.: J. Munsell, 1871. This antique hardcover limited-edition book is bound in brown cloth boards with a paste-down spine label with black lettering. Covers are worn, cover edges and corners show heavy wear, some soil; endpapers browned, with some markings; most inner pages clean. This edition was "annotated" by the previous owner, with notes and pasted-in information throughout - all concerning the edition, illustrations and information containted within. This book was limited to 50 copies; it is illustrated throughout with full-page steel engraving plates. Additionally, this copy was the former property of author William Stone. Stone's bookplate appears on the front inner board, and pasted down to the front endpaper is a letter to Stone from the book's author, Jeptha Simms, dated Sept. 26, 1881. Simms is writing Stone to tell him of a new book he's working on (another history of New York), and offering to get one of Stone's books into the hands of some people in… Read More

Description:
1821, London, first edition in English. Modern fine binding of half leather and marbled boards by Starr Bookworks. An underappreciated volume likely due to this first English translation. The modern translator, Seeber, describes this translation as the "product of a prosaic and incompetent literary hack" (please tell us how you really feel). It also omits about 40% of the original work leaving out daily interactions with Americans, Native Americans, and the most colorful events. Condition is Very Good: modern fine binding is excellent. Interior has scattered foxing and toning, no writing or old ownership marks. Marginal pencil mark on final page. Frontis edge conserved. Paginates: frontis, [2], 102, 5 plates, modern blanks. Six plates total. Other engravings in text. The Mammoth Skeleton plate is a modern copy. The frontis is a fairly spectacular aquatint of New York harbor. Copies with color plates are uncommon. See Howes M757. Please see images of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire.… Read More

The pages are white, crisp and clear of any markings. "This is a history of the visual arts produced in the geographical area that now constitutes the United States. Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art

This book is in good condition. There is a lot of wear on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. There is also a substantial amount of staining on the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned. There are also markings throughout the book. "The roots of this book reach back to the early 1950s in Paris, where I began my professional career as a journalist. France, supported by the United States, was then fighting to retain its hold in Indochina against the Vietminh, the Communist-led nationalist movement there. As I reported on the French end of the war, I soon became acquainted with the names and places in Vietnam from a distance, But I scarcely imagined that they were to be part of my own experience. Then, in 1959, I was assigned to cover eastern Asia; the region that included Vietnam became my beat for more than two decades. I visited Vietnam most recently in 1981 for seven weeks, the longest permitted an American correspondent since the Communists gained control of the entire… Read More
