About This Item

London: F.S. Ellis, 1868. First Edition. Green Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾. N/a. viii, 676, 4 (ads.) pp. 1868. First edition. A presentation copy. Not actually signed but permanently 'touched' by the great hand. A presentation copy. The inscription to the front endpaper reads: 'With the author's Compliments'. A charming woodblock to the title page - the same image has its own tissue guarded page at the rear of the book. A good only tight copy in original publisher's green cloth - with printed paper title block to the spine (a chip to the head of this paper title block with loss of the 'E' and the 'A' of 'Earthly'. Two other former owner's inscriptions in ink to the book - neither to the front endpaper. One is to the front paste-down and a contemporary ink neat gift inscription to the half title page dated March 28 1875. The textblock remains very largely clean with just the very occasional fox spot mark or soil mark. All four board corners bumped or turned in with some rubbing to the cloth and some loss of the cloth to several corners. Rubbing at the head and tail of the spine with a couple of chips to the outer cloth at the head of the spine. A little soiling and slight damp marking to the front board - in no way heavy. Some spotting to the endpapers - not heavy. A good, tight copy with a direct link to the great artist/poet - one of the truely great Victorian artists of the nineteenth century.
