New Ywork: Putnam's, 1871. Octavo. xi, 666 pages (continuous paging), 230 maps inserted within the text and 24 color pages Translated from Le Terre it presented not only a treatment of lands and oceans but a detailed description of landforms. A fascinating view of the best 19th century thought which had the notion that the general circulation consists of equatorial and polar current, and that the changeable weather of the temperate zone is due to that conflict. The 24 colored pages show the best representations of its time of how the maps were viewed including detailed ones of the Middle Course of the Mississippi, the Valley of the Adige; the glaciers of Vernagt, Langthal and Gurgl as well as Australia and the Adjacent Archipelago. One of the classic works on the history of climate theory and landforms. Bound in green cloth centrally stamped in gilt depicting earth, spine lettering and top edges gilt, light wear to spine ends, rear hinge of volume two cracked. A good set.
