New York and Boston, Thomas Y. Crowell & Co, 1893, small hardcover (6" x 4"), xviii-311 pp, from the Crowell's "Handy Volume Classics" series of which 36 volumes were in print at the time, Good condition in highly decorated gilt boards and backstrip, top edge gilt. Straight, tight and clean, a few light pencil marks throughout, a couple of incidental scrapes and perforations to two pages of introduction, front and rear hinges starting but very firm. About 80 of the earlier poems of James Russell Lowell with a 12-page biographical sketch of the popular poet by Nathan Haskell Dole. Illustrated with an unidentified black-&-white frontispiece plate and four additional plates depicting certain aspects of the poems, laid in is a small illustrated catalogue of Crowell's "Handy Volume Classics" to date.
