Green pictorial paper boards backed in brown cloth, with cover illustration of two cavemen- one shooting a bow and arrow, the other wearing fur and holding a club. Slight bowing and cocking, with moderate soiling and rubbing to boards and spine. Pale yellow endpapers, illustrated with green line drawing of a jungle scene, browned at edges with previous owner's name in pencil to top edge of ffep and flyleaf. Interior toned with some light soiling scattered to edges, several corners creased. 23 colored plates, illustrating ancient civilization.

Printed on heavy coated paper, this is in the same format as his Noah's Ark and Pocahontas with pictorial endpapers and title page plus 23 full page color plates, one opposite each page of text. See Bader p.22 who notes "Early in his career, Smith had some imitators, but he had no followers." First editions of Smith's picture books have become quite scarce.
