Description: The panoramic cover scene is from a painting by Alexander Francis Harmer, an artist who settled in the Santa Barbara area in the early 1890s. This was originally published in 1910. When the author died suddenly in 1920, his widow, in response to many requests, had a second edition published. The following is paraphrased from the foreword by John C Woodward: ''Hawley's book has long been considered a concise and accurate history of Santa Barbara covering the period before the coming of the Americans. While sentimental and written in a turn of the century style, it is these very qualities which make it so pleasurable s well as informative. In this third, enlarged edition, the text is reproduced unchanged from the first edition; however the number of illustrations has been increased from the original 12 to a total of 62. All of the three photographs, two etchings, three drawings and four maps from the 1910 edition are included (except one of the etchings appears only on the end papers of the new edition bound in hardcover [thus not included in this paperback edition]. An index has been added.''
