Du Simitiere's role as a founding father of numismatics in this country has been virtually forgotten. The following pages tell the story of Du Simitiere, as much as possible, in his own words. His life was replete with ironies. The saddest irony is that he died a pauper, was buried in an unmarked grave, yet fathered an avocation whose very name today is synonymous with wealth.
