About This Item

Rigby, Adelaide, 1979. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. Illustrator: Various Contemporary. 700 g; 176 pages, includes an index of ships, index of persons, and bibliography. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white reproductions of documents, and maps and photographs and drawings, bound in papered boards with a colour illustrated dust jacket, the book has only slight rubbing at the heel of the spine and light fading of the spine section of the jacket, and previous owner's name and details at the bottom right-hand corner of the front free end page. As far back as the early 1600s, the Dutch East India Company instructors merger ships to strike out eastwards after the Cape of Good Hope on their way to the East Indies. This brought the company ships close to the West Coast of Australia. Even though there was much danger for The Indiamen in those uncharted waters, the company thought the risk worth taking because the long voyage was almost halved. -- front fold over blurb Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
