About This Item
New York: D. Appleton & Co.. Very Good. 1869. First Edition. Hardcover. Rare pedagogic atlas designed and engraved by Joseph Enthoffer, a topographical engineer and engraver for the United States Coast Survey whose tenure at that agency spanned much of the second half of the nineteenth century. Half polished brown calf over brown moiré-grained cloth: competently rebacked and recornered. Illustrated with engraved title and 24 engraved plates (several transfer-printed in colors). The plates, intended for students of topographical drawing, demonstrate the conventional styles, signs, and exacting specifications required to technically produce a serviceable geographic or hydrographic map. CONDITION: A few cover/edge scuffs, shelf labels on lower front cover; ink stamps of the British Patent Office Library to the verso of title and each plate, British Library discard stamp to title verso; plates VG+. Together with: a scarce spiral-bound facsimile of the 108-page Manual of Topography, and Text-Book of Topographical Drawing to which the present work is an accompaniment. Technical; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
