This false imprint associated with Spence & Mawman of York. Appears to be the first edition printed with continuous pagination.
This book has 3 of the four boards as all have detached. The signature of the original owner, James Gafking (Dr. James Gafking) is written on each of the 3 boards. The bindings are still strong and all pages are intact. No markings inside. Includes the rare correction on page 268 of volume 2 where "Cons" is replaced by "Janus" in printed handwriting.

The name of a former owner is written in a neat hand on the front fly leaf: "Serg. John A. Fisher Northfield Mass." He is listed in the book on pages 171 and 369, as being wounded at Spottsylvania, before being discharched in 1864. Also, according to a separate note inserted in the book, Fisher's cousin was Joseph Austin Harris, listed on page 371; discharged in 1865.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
