Now a very scarce and important title.. The outcome of Lady Franklin's efforts to glorify the dead of the Franklin expedition meant Rae was shunned somewhat by the British establishment after he suggested the men had resorted to cannibalism. Although he found the last link in the much sought after Northwest Passage Rae was never awarded a Knighthood, nor was he remembered at the time of his death. He was the only major explorer of the era not to receive a knighthood. Only recently has Rae’s contribution to exploration been acknowledged and he is now considered by many to be the greatest Arctic Explorer of all time..
