About This Item

Garden City: Doubleday, Page & Co, 1915. First Edition. Original Cloth. Very Good. pp: xvii, 248, (1); complete with frontispiece and three other plates. Bound in red cloth, gilt lettering on spine and cover, showing a pitcher's windup on the cover. 7.5" x 5" In his seven-page introduction, Connie Mack, then manager of the Philadelphia Athletics, tells of his friendship with author Needham who accompanied the A's on several Western game trips. This work contains two long stories with baseball settings: The Double Squeeze and The Jinx. Mr. Mack, as we knew him when I was a kid and played neighborhood ball with his grandson, here calls The Jinx "the best baseball story I have ever read." [Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925, N-28.].
