About This Item

London: Downey & Co, 1902. Reprint. Engraved prontispiece, pictorial title-page, and 10 plates by George Standfast. and 1 by D. Maclise xlviii, 307 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Bound in 3/4 blue morocco. Very Good. Standfast, George. Reprint. Engraved prontispiece, pictorial title-page, and 10 plates by George Standfast. and 1 by D. Maclise xlviii, 307 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. Later edition of Mills' celebrated satire on Count d'Orsay (a man charcterized by Byron as a "cupidon déchainé") and the beau monde of the 1840's, the principal evidence for the Count's flagrant and promiscuous gallantry. The novel depicts many of his contemporaries and friend in impudently thin disguises: Lady Blessington as "Lady Rivington." Joseph Grego says the book was instantly suppressed; but as Sadleir observes, "one is less surprised that it should have been withdrawn than that in 1844 it should have ever been published." Sadleir, Blessington-D'Orsay, pp. 283ff. Sadleir 1736a; Wolff 4801; Block p. 161 (all for First Edition)
