The entirety of the Marquis de Sade's oeuvre was restricted from publication soon after his death in 1814. Written in 1788 the present work was not published until this edition of 1881, and it was not until 1983 that his works were allowed unfettered distribution in the UK. Square octavo. Publisher's blue cloth-backed marbled boards, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, edges uncut. Spine sunned and gilt faded, a little occasional browning in gutter, a very good copy.
