1800. ("John Adams"), on partly printed document, on vellum, Philadelphia, May 3, 1800. 13" x 15" (a few small holes at the folds; some light scattered toning at edges and folds mostly on the verso). Countersigned by Timothy Pickering as secretary of state. The reverse also bears an endorsement by James McHenry*, secretary of war. The embossed paper seal remains intact at lower left. The Adams signature is particularly bold and dark. An attractive impressive example! A grant for a parcel of land granted to Bennett Tompkins, heir of Christopher Tompkins, "a Subaltern for three years," under the provisions of "An Act to enable the Officers and Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment, to obtain titles to certain lands lying north-west of the River Ohio, between the Little Miami and Sciota Rivers." *James McHenry (1753-1816), signer of the Constitution and namesake of Fort McHenry. Timothy Pickering (1745-1829), born July 17, 1745; died January 29, 1829; politician from Massachusetts; third United States Secretary of State 1795-1800 under Presidents George Washington and John Adams.. Following the ratification of the Adams-Onis Treaty, President James Monroe was authorized on March 3, 1821, to take possession of Florida for the United States and provide for its initial governance. After appointing William Pope Duval as the first civilian governor in 1822 he began filling other appointments including the attorneys general for East and West Florida.
