London: W. Wright, 1820. viii, 318pp, plates. Later full calf by Riviere and Son, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, contrasting author label to third, remaining panels gilt with leafy stem corner pieces with a central flower surrounded by small roundel, flower heads and crosses, covers with double fillet bordering a leafy stem roll, gilt double fillet to edges, gilt roll to inner edges, t.e.g., with marbled endpapers. Outer joints rubbed, slightly cracking but holding well, occasional light spotting internally, but generally quite bright and clean. Previous owners bookplate to front marbled pastedown (Cyril Lockett). Complete with eighteen coloured aquatints by Charles Williams. One of many Syntax imitations, but Abbey does note that the "text might conceivably be genuinely by Combe". Williams is described by Houfe as "a follower and copyist of James Gillray" (Houfe page 348). Tooley 432, Prideaux, page 357 and Abbey Travel 109. First Edition. Full Calf. Good+. Illus. by Williams, Charles. 8vo.

London: W. Wright, 1820. First edition. Engraved title page & 16 [of 17] hand-colored aquatint plates after Charles Williams. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary boards, recased and rebacked in later cloth. One plate detached. Lacking Abbey's Plate 12 ("Doctor Syntax / producing his certificate of marriage to his hostess"). Williams, Charles. First edition. Engraved title page & 16 [of 17] hand-colored aquatint plates after Charles Williams. 1 vols. 8vo. Syntax Spinoff. The plates of this rollicking Doctor Syntax spinoff are by Charles Williams, chief caricaturist for the printseller Fores, and they are as fully irreverent as the Rowlandson (and Gillray) plates which were his inspiration, and all the more so for their Gallic setting. As for the text, "it might conceivably be genuinely by Combe ... " - Abbey. Abbey Travel 109; Houfe, p. 498
