Description:
LONDON: Printed and Sold by J. Raw, and Sold also by Longman Rees & Co. and G.B. Whittaker, 1827, 1827 Second, 'enlarged' edition of the only work written by Laetitia Ford, nee Jermyn first published in 1824. Laetitia's father was a bookseller in Ipswich. Extremely scarce. She was allowed by her family to foster an interest in butterflies (at a time when women were not supposed to have serious occupations) and was greatly encouraged by her neighbour, the Revd William Kirby of Barham. This copy is complete in a plain board binding with 2 hand coloured and 3 plain plates. Laetitia drew the plates and dedicated the work to Kirby. The binding is serviceable but slightly stained and with a slight split on the spine. The contents are uncut so page sizes vary. One colour plate is stained and there is occasional spotting to preliminaries. Small light book, please enquire if you would like us to assess postage at cost.

London : Lovell Reeve, 1857 A very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates by G B Sowerby. This volume is part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series designed for young people and those starting out to study the natural world. The binding has gilt decoration and titles to the spine and a gilt crab design to the front board, with blind stamped decoration to both boards. Internally a list of Reeve's publications has been inserted before the front endpaper. With half title, frontispiece, title page, text with 19 further plates, and publisher's advert at the rear. The cloth binding has been rebacked, relaying the original spine, so it is sound and tight. The cloth has some fading particularly to the spine but is clean with a bright gilt crab. There is an armorial bookplate of James Cowan to the front pastedown which is a little grubby. The contents are in very good clean condition. The rear endpaper has a slight fold. Light toning to page edges.…

Jacket clean and bright. Laid-in tri-fold pamphlet from the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. xxvi + 230 pages. Crossing stick bridges over swollen rivers and battling swarms of tsetse flies, Mark and Delia Owens found their way into one of the most startlingly beautiful, wild places on earth, the northern Luangwa Valley in Zambia. Gangs of ivory poachers were not only shooting the elephants but also virtually enslaving local villagers. Against unimaginable odds, Mark and Delia stopped the poaching by helping the villagers find other work, start small businesses, and improve their health care and education. Living with wild creatures all around (lions sleeping…

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and…
