London: John Murray, 1853. First Edition. Octavo. Half-title, folding frontispiece and 12 other plans and tinted plates, 2 large folding maps at rear, with hundreds of textual wood block illustrations. The author became increasingly interested in locating and unearthing the great cities of biblical renown. He quite his law firm and traveled to where he believed Nineveh was but found other important palaces and artifacts before locating Nineveh. Bound in full red polished calf ruled in gilt, raised bands with compartments fully decorated in gilt, red morocco spine label gilt marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, some wear to head, some spots of discoloration. Internally text is clean and without foxing, previous owner's name plate with name scratched out. A very good copy of this important work.
