Thomas Chalmers influenced Wilberforce, Gladstone, and a host of major religious figures as well as Hugh Miller the best known geologist of his day. His effort for the Hibernian society to distribute Bibles to the Irish poor were the source of his international fame. He also preached a famous sermon on the need to assist the destitute poor. It is difficult today to realize that evangelicals of the 19th century saw a need to help those in economic helplessness. Louis Tappan and Charles Finney agreed with him though they did not agree with his strict Presbyterian theology on predestination.
