About This Item
Berlin: Kirche Jesu Christi Der Heiligen Der Letzen Tage, 1937. Octavo. 140p. Only copy in OCLC at Brigham Young University. Joseph M. Dixon's important article on "Mormons in the Third Reich" shows how the church with its estimated 14,000 members managed to survive in Nazi Germany. This item on the Mormon view of the 10 Commandments published in 1937 is important not only for noting its Berlin publishing office but for the list of the German language books available at that time; however, the references to Zion and Israel meant that by 1938 and 1939 the Nazi's began to curtail LDS activities. The footnote at the bottom of p. 2-3 of the catalog notes this applies to missionaries in all districts. Originally scouting was permitted but now only the Hitler Jugend could be allowed with a program for boys. By early 1939 the suppression began and all LDS missionaries fled Germany in August just days before Hitler invaded Poland. This would appear to be among the last LDS items printed in the Third Reich. Laid is one of the original Third Reich stickers of the Winterhilfswerk (Winter Charity Campaign or WHW) which showed that the person had made a donation for charitable purposes. It has the swastika and the years 1938-1939 but it may have been added by anyone in the intervening years.
