1714 Joutel Journal Voyage MEXICO La Salle Texas Expedition Indians Mississippi

The BEST account of the La Salle's Texas Expedition!

Henri Joutel was an important 17th-century French explorer who is best remembered for his involvement in the final American expedition of Rene de La Salle. The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. The established colony was a failure after being overtaken by Karankawa Indians.

According to Howes,
"Most reliable eye-witness account of La Salle's two-years wanderings in Texas."

Chip to head and base of spine; one-inch closed tear to head of front panel; small scuff to rear panel. Exceptional first printing of Burnham's groundbreaking work in an uncommonly bright dust jacket. Fine in a very good-plus dust jacket.. James Burnham's (1905-1987) seminal work in which he argues that capitalism will be displaced by a form of global managerialism and, as a result, bureaucratic elites will supplant workers and capitalists at the apex of power. Prior to publishing The Managerial Revolution Burnham was a prominent Trotskyist, but he would resign from the Workers Party in 1940 and thereafter become an influential theorist in the post-war American conservative movement. This was an extremely important expedition because it laid the groundwork for the Western Expansion, and gave our government a first hand account of the resources we picked up with the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The expedition was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, but was greatly assisted by Sacajawea, their Native American guide and translator. He had, as his secretary, Martin Sauer, who was responsible for this, the fullest account of this important expedition. Visits were made to Kodiack, Montague Island, and Prince William Sound. Eventually a scarcity of provisions forced the return of the expedition to the mainland. The… Read More

Such a book is difficult to title. A History of United States Art sounds awkward and logically might even be construed to exclude the arts of the colonial period. Thus, with apologies to our northern and southern neighbors, I use the title A History of American Art, knowing full well that the terms America and the United States are not synonymous...." - Preface from A History of American Art
