He is regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism although he rejected the term, and preferred to be called a realist. A superb draftsman, he is especially identified with the subject of the dance, and over half of his works depict dancers. These display his mastery in the depiction of movement, as do his racecourse subjects and female nudes. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and depiction of human isolation. The text is illustrated with numerous black-and-white reproductions of Edgar Degas' work. Blue coloured boards with gilt writing on the front panel and spine. Illustrated dustwrapper, being a self portrait by Edgar Degas, against a white background with black writing on the front panel and spine. the dust jacket has a short tear at the top left of the front panel, a small chip, right of the rear panel, and rubbing on the bottom edge. The major fault with the dustwrapper is that it has become " loose " and does not fit the book particularly well.
