In 1894 the Adams Library of 2,756 volumes was transferred from the Thomas Crane Public Library of Quincy, Mass. where it had been lodged since 1882 to the Boston Public Library. The Library of John Adams was built at great expense (as is noted in David McCullough's biography of the President) also Abigail felt he spent too much. Here is a list of the great volume of history, law and philosophy that he had obtained. They are noted by categories with size (folio, etc) and other factors (a few volumes were missing that had been in his personal library). Bound in madern half leather over green cloth boards with red morocco spine label gilt, raised bands with compartments stamped in blind.
