Gutierrez feels that although Pitt's 1966 book "was a product of its time" and fails to fully address recent themes, that his interests nevertheless were perennial, he was sensitive to assimilation, internal power struggles, the weight of immigration, and was "profoundly concerned about bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination --issues still ever potent in California.
