'Reglement Donne par une Dame de Haute' was a late 17th-century letter written by Duchesse de Liancourt, Jeanne de Schomberg, which instructs her granddaughter on the duties she should expect as a wife and mother, how to execute them, and how to avoid common pitfalls. (Seifert). It discusses the importance of shunning card games, going to operas and plays, and reading novels – all of which would undoubtedly lead to the neglect of wifely duties.

1792. Very Good. Handwritten letter, dated Jan. 28, 1792, to James McCubbin Lingan, Collector at Georgetown, Md., acknowledging the receipt of a paid draft of the Treasurer for $400. Signed by Tench Coxe (1755-1824), who had been appointed Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in 1789 when Alexander Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Coxe served in the Continental Congnress and was the author of numerous political pieces. James McCubbin Lingan (1751-1812) served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was appointed Collector of the Port of Georgetown by George Washington after the war. He was murdered by a mob while defending the freedom of the press during the War of 1812. In Very Good Condition: several old folds; starting to separate along one fold; otherwise, clean and solid.

collection of noble letters written to and by a number of iconic Italian and Roman figures including popes, doges of Genoa, kings of Naples, and even some of the letters between Julius Caesar and Cicero. This 1644 edition was collected and edited by Italian historian Girolamo Donzellini. The first Latin edition published by Elzevier.

1892. Near Fine. 1 handwritten letter, dated Washington, D.C., 21 Feb. 1892, from Senator John Sherman in reply to an inquiry from J. M. Dickinson, Esq., New Lisbon, Ohio, about whether his son could get a position at the "Public Printer." John Sherman (1823-1900) represented Ohio in the U. S. Senate from 1861 to 1877 and from 1881 to 1897. From 1877 to 1881 he was Secretary of the Treasury, and in 1897 and 1898 he was Secretary of State. The Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890 is named after him. General William Tecumseh Sherman was his brother. Using official Senate Chamber stationery and envelope the Senator tells Dickinson that there were not openings at the time but that he would inquire again later. J. M. (John M.) Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon, Ohio, through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from… Read More

Jonathan Swift was an Irish author most-known for his 18th-century masterpieces such as 'Gulliver's Travels'. In addition to his magnum opus, he published other lesser-known works including his 'Drapier's Letters' and 'Journal to Stella'. The 'Stella' journal is a collection of dozens of letters written to his friend Esther Johnson whom he called Stella.
This beautiful late 19th-century edition of Swift's 'Letters and Journals' was published in 1885 by Kegan, Paul, and Trench. It contains commentary and notes by Stanely Lane-Poole.
