Following his resignation from the Communist Party of Germany in 1938, Koestler took his "understanding of the psychology of revolution and the propaganda machine" (Connolly) to write this celebrated political and philosophical novel on the dangers of Stalinism and revolutionary ideology. Though a translation, this was the first publication of the work, owing to the fact that the original manuscript, composed in German, was lost until its rediscovery in 2015. As a result, Koestler translated this English edition back into the German language in 1944. The work was ranked eighth in the Modern Library's 100 Best Novels list of 1998. Octavo.
