Sir Henry Morton Stanley GCB (born John Rowlands; 1841 â€" 1904) was a British journalist, explorer, soldier, colonial administrator, author and politician who was famous for his exploration of central Africa and his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone, whom he later claimed to have greeted with the now-famous line: "Dr Livingstone, I presume?" He is mainly known for his search for the source of the Nile, work he undertook as an agent of King Leopold II of Belgium, and for his command of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, which is the subject of these books He was knighted in 1899
This 2 volume set is in very good condition overall, but has slight 1/2" to 1" tears at the top of the spines The large foldout map in the front of volume 2 has a clean 4" tear at the fold, but is still complete Also the photo plate after p 172 in volume 1 is present, but has become detached The glit illustrated covers are otherwise in excellent condition with only modest shelf wear, and the bindings and text blocks of both volumes are sound.
