About This Item
[George N. Thomas], 1877 Ambrose Bierce's rarest book. 131 pages. Original green cloth, decorative black stamping on front cover, in blind on rear, lettered in gilt, plain endpapers, page edges stain red-orange. The true first edition without the author's added chapter at rear and "Author's Copy" printed at bottom of title page. A famous literary hoax that attacks the waltz. Written by Bierce in collaboration with Thomas Harcourt, whose father-in-law William Herman Rulofson provided financial support for the publication. This "Author's Copy" edition, which precedes the trade edition published later the same year by Henry Keller, may have been printed as an uncorrected proof, as this copy is marked up with editorial marks in pencil, correcting spelling, punctuation, and problems with the type. This book is in good condition with light silverfishing to the covers and wear to the corners and spine ends; remnants of a label around the foot of the spine; old stain to front endpapers and fore edge of textblock; and modern bookplate to rear paste-down.. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good.
