Hill and three other investors purchased the nearly bankrupt St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1878, renaming it the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railway Company the following year. [Billy the Kid] Cowboy Life. Portland, Maine: Chisholm Bros. [1880s] Maroon embossed boards with gilt title and vignette of cowboy on horseback. 5 x 6 in. Printed on one side of a single strip folded accordion style and attached by its leading edge to upper cover. 22 photogravure images on 12 pages. Edge wear, else unusually bright gilt and near fine interior.

Billy the Kid 28: "Rare." Not in Adams, Herd. Images include "The Mess Wagon," "Branding on the Prairie," "Roping a Pony from the Herd," "Throwing a Steer," "Skinning a Beef," "Branding a Maverick," and more. Possibly including an image of Billy the Kid. According to Dykes the cowboy image, which also appeared in Chittenden's Ranch Verses, strongly resembles the only known image of Billy the Kid.

[Missouri][Politics] Autograph Letter Signed. St Louis, Easter Sunday, April 7, 1844. From R. C. Cabeen to his Cousin Mr. J. W. Cabeen in Bluff Post office, Merced County, Illinois. One sheet folded into four leaves. Self-folded to stamp-less envelope. Very good. Legible writing.
Mentions the children have had the measles, and the Spring business season has not yet occurred. At the end a short discussion of wheat prices and crops. Most of the letter is a long discussion of Missouri politics, the election and Henry Clay, etc. In the 1844 election Henry Clay was the Whig candidate and James Polk was the Democratic candidate. A faction of the Democratic Party were known as the Loco Focos and the Whigs charged that Van Buren was a Loco Foco radical. Clay was referred to as "Ol Coon Clay," so that "coon" was a reference to Whigs. These terms are used in the letter:

Lithographed map. 21 x 27 cm. With promotional text in Spanish. Dated at end: México, abril de 1872. Includes map of portions of the United States and Mexico showing railroads from New York to Texas and proposed railroad route from Texas through Mexico to the Pacific Ocean and south to Mexico City.
OCLC shows 5 holdings (Newberry; Harvard; Mus. NM; SMU & UT-Arlington). A project to extend a railroad from Texas to Mexico. This is a promotional urging Mexico to approve the route which was to connect the Texas lines with Mexico, then to Presidio and thence to either the Pacific or to the Gulf of Mexico.

[California] S. Lang? Autograph letter, signed. San Francisco, California. June 16, 1852. To his wife. One sheet folded into four leaves. Some 450 words, around 350 on the voyage.
Describes his trip across Panama, including being thrown off his mule, to the amusement of the natives. Also a woman who was a passenger had her two infants being carried by Indian women and they were separated during a torrential downpour. When they had not come to Panama City by nine p.m. they went searching for them and found them at 4 a.m., some 10 miles away "asleep on the bodies of their natives." They stopped to load coal in Acapulco. The passage took 25 days, but he arrived in good health, because until they were within three day of arrival "one might imagine him left on the Hudson Bay River so very smooth was the sea." Nice, if relatively brief, first-hand account of an 1854 steamship voyage to San Francisco.

Where in a perfect climate, may be found cheap homes for a million people. Stains and splits at fold. Good.

References 1890 population and agricultural statistics and the forthcoming World's Columbian Exposition which was head in 1893. "List of the cities, towns, and stations located on the line of the Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railway in Texas" and historical information on select Texas counties. Also covers Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois, and parts of Tennessee, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, and New Mexico, but not the southernmost tip of Texas.

Adina De Zavala led the opposition to tearing down portions of the Alamo "in a resolute and voluble stand" and was instrumental in the preservation of portions of the original wall of the convent. In fact, she barricaded herself inside the north barrack of the Alamo for three days in February 1908 to protest its destruction. In 1912 she organized the Texas Historical and Landmarks Association, which placed thirty-eight markers at historic sites in Texas. She probably did more than any other one person in stirring interest in the preservation of the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio. – Handbook of Texas. A tireless protector of Texas history, De Zavala is now honored with a marker in the patio of the convent at the Alamo

Excellent images of cowboys with a covered wagon. The images show cowboys on horse-back with a covered wagon; using poles to get the wagon up a steep trail; wagon and riders on a trail; wagon, horses and men in camp; view of a town with hills in the background and view of a farm or ranch. I was told by my seller that these images were with other images of Lakota Sioux, perhaps in Montana or Wyoming.

[Sheep Ranching] Western Photo Album. No publication information. [Circa 1890s?] Black album, stiff boards. 6 x 7 in. 21 black and white photos 3 x 5 in. Album pages detached at binding. Photos are glossy and there is glare in some of the images; not glued down. Very good.
Photos include sheep ranching and sheep dipping; wagons, including logging wagons; log cabin and horse with western saddle and rig; boating on a lake; carriages; horseman and barn; people in their Sunday best. Perhaps Utah, Colorado, Montana or the Pacific Northwest? Date is based on clothing, saddle and equipment.

Howes W322, Rader 3627, Six Guns 2375, Herd 2499. Wheeler served also as a post trader and Indian agent and was in command of Fort Reno in Oklahoma Territory. Excellent on Indians and Indian government scouts. A chapter on Wild Bill Hickok and one entitled "Western Badmen."
