About This Item

England: Lennard Publishing, 1995. MacColl never had a vocation, he drifted into employment situations. A painter of exquisite watercolours, it was poverty which usually drove him away from his beloved painting and made him seek paid employment. In 1890 he was appointed the art critic on the Spectator and moved to the Saturday Review in 1898. Readers were soon aware of the power of his 'fearless and fertile pen'. He urged the government to be more generous in its sponsorship of the arts and it was as a result of further campaining by MacColl that the National Art Collections Fund was formed in 1903. In 1906 Hardback First edition with Black and white plates. MacColl was offered the post of keeper of the National Gallery of British Art (the Tate) and was happy to exchange writing for an administrative role. He then accepted an appointment as Curator of the Wallace Collection where, to the consternation of the Trustees, he immediately rehung the Collection and rewrote the official catalogue..
