The book tells of his wartime experiences with the Royal Air Force Regiment, beginning as an Administrative and Speical Duties Officer and ending as a member of 101 Beach Squadron in Combined Operations in the first wave of landings in France on D-Day. It describes the building of a flying boat base on Addu Atoll in the Maldive Islands, the retreat from Burma along the Burma Road into China, his service with Chiang Kai Chek's army, the training of a commando force in India, his repatriation to Britain where he volunteered for the newly form Combined Operations Group for service in the invasion of France..
