Lora Macrae is headstrong and beautiful and will have no truck with the English army of occupation in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. An orphaned child, she frequently roams the countryside around her home in Glen Clova with only her deerhound 'Loyal' as companion. One day when wandering alone on the hills, the hound disappears into a wood and Lora begins to cry 'Loyal'. As the word resounds through the hills she repeats the call, over and over again, simply for the pleasure of hearing the echo. But unknown to Lora, a stranger hears her defiant call and with a measured and purposeful stride he makes his way into the wood. Her passion for the Jacobite cause is only matched by the torment within her as she is forced to reconcile her hate for the English and her seeming love for a young English officer whose job it is to hunt down the very men Lora is trying to help.
