Caldwell, ID: The Caxton Printers, 1933. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Signed by Hemene Ka-Wan / Old Wolf / L.V. McWhorter, with the inscription ..To EA. Brininstool, Debunker of Fallacious History. November 7, 1933." --------- Edited & Illustrated by Heister Dean Guie; Notes by L.V. McWhorter (Old Wolf); Foreword by Chief Standing Bear. -------- The book contains 27 tales, mostly featuring the trickster figure Sin-ka-lip', the coyote, as the main character. Although it was promoted as a collection of tales for children and general audiences with little exposure to Native American literature and culture, Mourning Dove intended Coyote Stories to force white Americans to reconsider assimilationist practices that taught Native American children to reject and ridicule. ------- Mourning Dove was the literary name chosen by Christine Quintasket, an Okanogan from the Colville Reservation of eastern Washington. Mourning Dove's education included sporadic attendance at the Goodwin Mission School near Kettle Falls, Washington, the Fort Spokane School for Indians, and the Fort Shaw Indian School in Montana. ---------- Yellow pebbled cloth, stamped and lettered in brown. 8vo; 7.75 inches tall; 228 pp. Photo portrait frontispiece; several full-page illustrations. --- Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Minimal shelf handling wear. A few chips to jacket spine including one affecting title, small chips at corners; a few foxing spots; near fine in very good jacket with the price of $1.50. -------- Brininstool was a cowboy poet, but was not a working cowboy. He lived most his life in Los Angeles, rubbed elbows with Will Rogers and Charles Russell, who met regularly as part of a western artists group at the University Club in LA. He is best known for Trail Dust of a Maverick (1914) and Bozeman Trail (1922). Brininstool was a prolific author on the subject of Indian Wars, especially on Little Big Horn..

Bison, 1990. Softcover. Very Good. 5x0x8. In Very Good+ condition. A powerful force and yet the butt of humor, the coyote figure runs through the folklore of many American Indian tribes. He can be held up as a "terrible example" of conduct, a model of what not to do, and yet admired for a careless. anarchistic energy that suggests unlimited possibilities. Mourning Dove, an Okanagan, knew him well from the legends handed down by her people. She preserved them for posterity in Coyote Stories, originally published in 1933. Here is Coyote, the trickster, the selfish individualist, the imitator, the protean character who indifferently puts the finishing touches on a world soon to receive human beings. And here is Mole, his long-suffering wife, and all the other Animal People, including Fox, Chipmunk, Owl-Woman, Rattlesnake, Grizzly Bear, Porcupine, and Chickadee. Here it is revealed why Skunk's tail is black and white, why Spider has such long legs, why Badger is so humble, and why Mosquito…
