[HAITIAN HISTORY: 1791]. (GATERAU, M.). COURRIER POLITIQUE ET LITTERAIRE DU CAP-FRANCAIS. Publie par M. Gaterau. [Seconde Annee]. Nos. 1 - 39, with scarce four-page supplement to No. 37 ("Supplement au no. 37... Du Jeudi 7 juillet 1791"). 3 Mars 1791 a 14 Juillet 1791. (Paris):: M. Gaterau,, 1791. First edition . The binding is scuffed and worn at extremities, spine has moderate chip at top edge, hinges shaken at few pages, but binding is quite tight, few pages of text have some light early staining; overall the text is quite fresh and clean. A good to very good copy. . Present here are the first thirty-nine numbers, including a supplement, for the second year, from March 3 to July 14, 1791. It provides a detailed history of the events in Cap Francais, Haiti, as reported by Gaterau, during a pivotal year of the entire history of Haiti. On February 25th, 1791, two mulattoes, Vincent Oge and Jean-Baptiste Chavannes, were executed. After working peacefully, but unsuccessfully, for political rights for the free blacks and mulattoes (Affranchis), they led an armed revolt against the colonial government. They were defeated and put to death in the public square at Cap Francais. That failed revolt, and the executions, led to the events of August 1791 in which revolutionary activity intensified, involving hundreds of Affranchis and slaves, resulting in the Concordat of Damiens, on September 24th, 1791, granting political rights to the Affranchis. The Courrier Politique et Litteraire du Cap-Francais provides a detailed record of events, political and literary, at a crucial period in Haitian (and French) history. . [Second Series, Nos. 1 to 39 complete, including a supplement to No. 37; text in French]. 12mo, contemporary calf decorated in gold on spine, contemporary marbled endpapers, 324 pages (paginated continuously). Edited by M. Gaterau, 'Courrier Politique et Litteraire du Cap-Francais' was a journal, published in Paris, devoted to political and literary matters in Haiti, beginning in March of 1790.
