London: The Hogarth Press,, 1940. Octavo. Original pale blue cloth, spine lettered in dark red, cream endpapers. With dust jacket. Spine and edges sunned, a few spots to boards, extremities rubbed, light foxing to endpapers and toning to last page, else internally clean. A very good copy in the very good jacket, slight wear to corners, a couple of edge-splits, 3 discreet tape repairs to verso, light dust-soiling to rear panel, not price-clipped. First edition, first impression, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "For Lady Milner, Nov. 1940, V.S.W.". This is a great association copy of a work uncommonly found inscribed. The recipient was Violet Georgina Milner, Viscountess, (1872-1958). After the death of her brother Leopold Maxse in 1932, Violet became editor of the political monthly National Review, known for its opposition to imperial Germany prior to World War I, and to appeasement in the inter war years. She had married Alfred Milner (1854-1925), 1st Viscount Milner, and one of the most important members of David Lloyd George's War Cabinet, in 1921. In May 1928 Lady Milner turned over important information relating to World War I and Lord Milner's role at the Doullens Conference in France to the Public Record's Office.
