About This Item

London: Ward Lock, 1934. Photoplay edition issued to coincide with the British release of classic film version of ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ starring Robert Donat, Elissa Landi, Louis Calhern, and Sidney Blackmer. The screenplay was adapted from Dumas’ novel by Philip Dunne, Rowland V. Lee, and Dan Totheroh. Small ownership stamp. Very good plus copy with a trace of edge wear in a very good bright price-clipped dust jacket with some dust soiling to the spine and rear panel and some small chips and tears. The front panel of the jacket is a superb color painting of the dashing Robert Donat holding a sword in his role as Edmond Dantes which wraps around to the spine and shows Elissa Landi gazing at him. One of the most attractive photoplay editions.

Synopsis

The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by Alexandre Dumas, often considered one of Dumas' most popular works alongside The Three Musketeers . The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It tells an incredible story of vengeance, following the journey of a wrongfully imprisoned man.

This is an epic amazing adventure which should be on everyone's list to read before dying. This was actually my 2nd time reading it. I guess when I 1st read it years ago, it must have been an abridged version and I didn't appreciate the scope and prose of Dumas' storytelling. Reading the unabridged over 1200 page book is definitely the way to go to get the full import of this magnificent story. Once you start it, you become so involved in it that you almost forget to participate in everyday life and feel that you can't wait to get back to reading it.

I read this with the aid of two study guides. I consider it to be the best book I've read. The only shortcoming was it the last two chapters were unneeded and detracted from my experience. It's adventures are enhanced by the style of being written as a serial
