Norwalk, CT: New Directions, 1939. First Edition. Very Good. First edition, first printing, first state. Signed by Henry Miller, with a long inscription on the front free end paper reading "For Marie - to replace the Cyclopean eye with which she scans the horizon in search of buzzards, evening stars and moth balls from the Grand Cosmocrator / [signed] Henry Valentine / Santa Monica / 8/24/41." Bound in publisher's beige cloth boards with brown fiber specks, with spine lettered in brown, and brown and white image of an eye in clouds pasted on the front cover, lacking the dust jacket. Very Good or better, with toning to edges and spine, and a small stain to the spine. Pages toned, endsheets offset. Hinge at title page exposed, though binding is firm. Uncommon signed in the first state. Shifreen & Jackson A23a.
