About This Item

UK: Thomas Telford, 1987. Soft cover. Very Good/No Jacket. This series of short guides to basic construction practice is being produced under the auspices of the various Engineering Groups of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Written by senior and experienced engineers, the guides are designed to aid young engineers in the transition from the university environment to work on site, and to provide a basic introduction for practising engineers approaching a particular aspect for the first time. Each deals succinctly with the terms used, the purpose of the technique and the most appropriate choice of equipment or procedure to suit the kinds of conditions which a newcomer could meet. The emphasis is on good practice and efficient deployment in terms of both cost and safety. Bibliographies are supplied of more detailed texts. h7 THOMAS TELFORD Methods of excavation and geotechnical processes must take account of groundwater conditions and their interaction if the proposed works are to be carried out with economy and safety. The soil conditions determine the variable permeability of the ground and how movements of the groundwater will occur whem pumping schemes are introduced. Groundwater can be extracted and controlled by a variety of pumping methods or its movements constricted by the insertion of impermeable walls. This guide provides information by which these alternatives of pumping and walling systems can be assessed. David Quinion is the Company Chief Engineer of Tarmac Construction Limited and his son Graham is a Senior Civil Engineer with Taylor Woodrow International Ltd.
