Etched allegorical frontispiece, incorporating portrait of dedicatee, plus 36 engraved plates, 30 folding. First French edition, 1709 with this copy's text and plates based on the 1722 edition, which was incorrectly credited solely to the artist responsible for the illustrations, Alexandre Le Blond. First German edition, Augsburg, 1731. This work elaborates on the basics of horticulture, planting a garden, selecting, planting and caring for the various plants, as well as the use of water features and fountains. The copper engraved plates present numerous illustrations of these topics -- layouts of various gardens and parks with flower beds, trellises, pools. stairs and terraces. Part of plate prior to page 187 colored. MILLARD III, 27. Raised bands, black leather spine label printed in gilt. Interior contents generally clean. Contemporary full mottled calf. Very good.
