About This Item

Mexico, MO: James Bradley, 1894. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Light green blind-ruled cloth with gilt lettering. ii, 275pp. Frontispiece, full-page portraits, floral endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear, with spine lightly age toned but front board gilt bright and gleaming; front floral endpaper a near-matching late 19th century replacement and frontispiece and title page likewise a discreet expert facsimile reproduced on late 19th century stock. A tight and attractive first edition of this scarce memoir, nice despite replacement front flyleaf/frontispiece/title page -- and priced accordingly. Typically verbose subtitle elaborates: "Being an account of the Battles, Marches and Hardships of the First and Second Brigades, Mo., C.S.A. Together with the thrilling adventures and narrow escapes of Captain Grimes and his fair accomplice, who carried the mail by 'the underground route' from the Brigade to Missouri." HOWES B 706. DORNBUSCH II, 2621. NEVINS I, 62.
