Slight cracking to gutters causing binding to be loose, however pages remain attached. Pages are lightly tanned throughout. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Light tanning to spine and edges with crushing to spine ends. Wear marks overall.

Worn copy in dark pink cloth with embroidered coat of arms mounted on the front cover, 80 pages. spine covering absent, other external wear, good hinges, sound but not tight text block, age-toned but clean pages, small sticker with coat of arms on front free endpaper, no names or other markings.. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Dj soiled on back panel, small chips and some rubbing at spine extremities and corners. Spine has a closed tear and hinges are slightly rubbed. Closed tear at top edge of front panel, still very good.

Very Good in an about Near Fine jacket, unclipped (no price), toned at the spine, lightly rubbed and with a few shallow chips and tears at the edges. Black buckram with gilt lettering on the spine and front board. Square and firmly bound, foxed at the edges and preliminaries, former owner's name on the front endpaper, clean otherwise. Firbank's last novel published during this lifetime, a subversive story about an eccentric (and pedophilic) holy man in Spain.

London: Grant Richards Ltd, 1926. First Edition. Firbank's final novel, published a month after his death in 1926. "Cardinal Pirelli has no story. Indeed, it has only two pieces of action. The book opens before the baptismal font as Pirelli in the full panoply of his office is administering the sacrament to a puppy, a young police dog named Crack. It ends when the naked Cardinal, on the night before his departure for Rome and the Pope's discipline as a consequence of the baptism, falls dead chasing the boy Chicklet around the great empty Cathedral of Clemenza, the "Cage of God" (Benkovitz, p.277). There was no corresponding American edition; Brentano's decided against publishing the book on "religious and moral grounds," fearing the anti-clerical sentiments would alienate customers.
