Oxford: at the Clarendon Press, 1894. Special Edited Edition: First Thus. black blind-stamped cloth with gilt. Very Good/N/A. photographic frontispieces. Tall 8vos, 7-volume set, black cloth with blind-stamped border & gilt lettering on spine, each of the first three volumes has a photographic frontispiece of a Medieval illustration with tissue guard, 6 engraved B&W plates of astrolabes in vol. IV, edited by Rev. Walter Skeat. Vol. I: Frontispiece, Romaunt of the Rose & Minor Poems, [lxiv] + 568pp. + [2pp. ads]; II. Frontispiece, Boethius / Troilus, lxxx + 506 pp. + [2 pp. ads]; III. Frontispiece, The House of Fame, Legend of Good Women, Astrolabe; Sources of The Canterbury Tales, lxxx + 6 plates with B&W engravings of Astrolabes + 504pp. + [2pp. ads]; IV. The Canterbury Tales (Text ) [xxiv] + 667pp. + [2pp. ads]; V. Notes to the Canterbury Tales, [xxvi] + 515pp. + [2pp. ads]; VI. Introduction, Glossary, and Indexes, ciii + 445pp. + [2pp. ads]; VII. Supplement: Chaucerian and Other Pieces, lxxxiv + 628pp. + [4pp. ads]. Superb edition in Very Good condition by an outstanding editor of the entire corpus of Chaucer's works. All pages and bindings relatively bright and tight. Very light age-toning to pages. A few pages (mainly among the adverts at the rear of each vol.) were once dog-eared but have been smoothed. Gilt slightly faded. Minimal wear to covers with corners very slightly bumped with small abraisions (< 1/8") to lower corners of volumes II & III exposing boards but not visible unless volumes scrutinized. Another barely noticeable feature is the very slight rectilinear discoloration (about 3" x 4") appearing on each volume's upper cover (caused perhaps by bookends or dividers placed between each volume causing small offset marks). Vol. V has wear along the outer upper & lower joints and paper beginning to split along inner hinges (though not affecting the sewing), plus smoothed once dog-eared upper right corners to pages (i-xvi). The pastedowns and all front free endpapers have moderate foxing but it doesn't affect ANY frontispieces, title pages, or texts.Seven volume set may require extra postage. Weight 16 lbs. 2 oz.

First Edition A catalogue of the royal and noble authors of England, Scotland, and Ireland; with lists of their works
Horatio Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford (24 September 1717 – 2 March 1797), better known as Horace Walpole, was an English writer, art historian, man of letters, antiquarian and Whig politician. He had Strawberry Hill House built in Twickenham, south-west London, reviving the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors. His literary reputation rests on the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. They have been published by Yale University Press in 48 volumes. The youngest son of the first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, he became the 4th and last Earl of Orford on his nephew's death in 1791. His barony of Walpole descended to his first cousin once removed of the same name but Baron Walpole of… Read More

Description:
Green leather spine with gilt banding and decoration. Red marbled boards.
The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit (commonly known as Martin Chuzzlewit) is a novel by Charles Dickens, considered the last of his picaresque novels. It was originally serialised between 1842 and 1844. While he was writing it Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work, but it was one of his least popular novels. The late nineteenth century English novelist George Gissing read the novel in February 1888 "for refreshment" but felt that it showed "incomprehensible weakness of story". Like nearly all of Dickens's novels, Martin Chuzzlewit was first published in monthly instalments. Early sales of the monthly parts were disappointing, compared to previous works, so Dickens changed the plot to send the title character to the United States. Dickens had visited America in 1842 in part as a failed attempt to get the US publishers to honour copyright laws. He satirized the country as a place filled with… Read More

Description:
Jacobi Gronovil, 1721. Hardcover. Fair. Bound in calf-skin vellum-- spine has 6 ridges with the words TACITUS Curante GRONOVIO (clearly done with quill and ink). It appears some text has worn away below this. The leather binding is an ivory color, more discolored along the spine, where it has begun to wear away at 2 of the ridges. Front and back are embossed with floral diamond design-- shows signs of shelfwear but nothing the sturdy vellum wouldn't handle. The binding is tight. Outer edges of pages very brown with age, dust and sun. Based on other book descriptions, I believe this is volume one of a two volume set. There's some foxing throughout the book, and yellowing around the edges of pages, as would be expected of a book this age. Paper is thicker than paper of later books, and you can see that each letter in the text was arranged by a typesetter. First pages (the introduction) begin with larger font that gradually reduces in size. 756 pages in all. The title page reads as follows: C. Cornelii… Read More
