The complete set of the 8 journals issued between Oct 1922 and July 1924 published by Chapman and Hall, London. Volume 1, numbers 1- 4 are individual volumes and each are the Deluxe Edition which are each numbered and Signed by both Clifford Bax and Austin O. Spare to either the front blank end-paper or the title page. Two are numbered 64' and the other two are numbered 65'. The edition size of the deluxe edition was only 75 copies and issued in cloth as opposed to stiff wrappers. All 4 volumes are in their original publisher s hardback bindings and in Very Good+ condition. Each deluxe copy from Vol.1 was issued with a loosely inserted lithograph Signed in pencil by the artist. All 4 of these lithographs are present ( Artists Cecil French : Grace Rogers : Haydn Mackey : Laurence Bradshaw). Volume 2, numbers 5-8 are the standard issue and contained within one volume with the original publisher's cloth-backed boards and the front wrappers bound in as issued. This volume is in Very Good++ condition. Profusely illustrated throughout by various artists including many striking contributions by Austin Osman Spare and John Austen, John Nash, Glyn Philpot, Robert Gibbings, Jack Yeats, Alan Odle Laurence Bradshsaw, Robert Gibbings, J B Yeats, John Nash, Grace Rogers, Cecil French, Frank Brangwyn, Evelyn Waugh (!) et al. A very wide range of Literary contributions include Huxley, Tagore, Waugh, Greene, W H Davies, Ford Madox Ford et al. The Books are in Very Good ++ condition. Some rubbing in places to the covers and a little spotting in places. The bindings are tight. Small previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown of Vol.2. Each book is protected in a loose Mylar archival cover. Loose editorial inserts and flyers accompany the books. 'The Golden Hind' publication was guaranteed for 2 yrs but it ceased production after that time. As described and reasoned for in one of the loosely inserted notes from the literary editor Clifford Bax, the publishers shifted the size to a smaller format for Vol 2., Numbers 5-8. The Deluxe Edition for the first year was over-subscribed and sold out before publication. I am unable to ascertain whether Vol 2 numbers 5-8 were also issued in the deluxe format or whether funding ran out. Equally I am not sure whether they were issued with a loose signed lithograph as in Volume 1. An exceptionally scarce set to find complete with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.

The First UK printing published by Elkin Mathews, London in 1914. The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition Octavo. Original green cloth with gilt titling to the spine and the front. A hint of pushing at the extreme spine tips. Some spotting within and light offsetting to the end-papers due to the quality of the paper stock used. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. A little toned, faintly marked, and with a some light rubbing to the extremities. A very small closed tear to the upper front spine fold, but nonetheless an exceptional condition copy for its age. Description:
3 Vols Set : 1) The Rich Jew Of Malta (Illus. Eric Ravilious), 2) The History Of Dr Faustus (Illus. Blair Hughes-Stanton), 3) Hero And Leander (Illus. Lettice Sandford): All 3 Volumes are the correct first issue printings published by the Golden Hours Press, London between 1932-33. All three books are in near Fine condition and are in their original bindings as issued. The Golden Hours Press was founded in 1932 by Christopher Sandford and Francis Newbury, but closed after one year when its proprietors took over the Golden Cockerel Press from Robert Gibbings. These three books were the only three books that The Golden Hours Press published. All three books are in their first issue elaborate morocco bindings and not to be confused with the more commoner second issue 'Hollis and Carter' rebinding of plain green buckram which occurred when an unspecified number of the remaining unbound copies of each title were taken over in 1933 by Hollis and Carter who chose to issue such copies in a cheaper binding.… Read More

Chapman & Hall, 1922. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Volume 1, no.1-4, of the literary magazine edited by Clifford Bax and Austin Osman Spare, bound the publisher's boards. While the boards show a century of wear, they have protected the interior wonderfully, including the original front wrappers of each number and the many lithographs. Bound with no. 4 is the prospectus for Volume 2, announcing the change to a smaller size ('Originally we chose the large page because we wished to give our droughtsmen the best possible conditions. We abandon it now because few people have shelves that are high enough to accommodate folios, and because (according to a well-known authority in the book trade) most people, if a magazine contains large pictures, disregard its literary contents') and offering a defense of the artists and the use of nudes ('It is always the nude that finds people out.
