Beveled boards with light rubbing, minor corner wear. Gilt bright. Front hinge starting. A few small spots of wear to Woodburytype, with the crackling texture often seen in this process. 67 b/w woodcuts in the text by Edmund Evans after various artists. Text clean and tight. Preceded by a privately printed edition in 1876. Quite a pleasing copy.

THIS EDITION IS AN UNEDITED REPRINT OF THE FIRST EDITION. 8vo, approximately 220 x 145 mm, 8½ x 5½ inches, portrait frontispiece of Izaak Walton, facsimile title page of the first edition of 1653, 7 text illustrations, a river scene and 6 small enrgravings of fish plus 2 pages of music, (the second printed upside down as issued), decorated initials, all by H. G. Webb, text printed in red and black. Pages: [14], 1-155, [1], the colophon printed in red in the shape of a dolphin, finely bound in full crushed morocco by Bayntun Binder of Bath, with gilt fishing motifs and decorations to spine and both covers, gilt title, author's name and date to spine, gilt top edge, a little gilt decoration to inner dentelles (turn overs), decorated endpapers. Spine faded to brown from green, uneven fading to covers, pale foxing to endpapers front and rear, otherwise a clean copy. Though the binding has faded it is still very attractive. See: Rodolphe L.
