The leather on the spine is a little dry, and there are some rough spots on the leather at the headcap on both hinges. Marbled endpapers. The text is toned and foxed. There are some initials on the verso of the front flyleaf of "J. P. C." This is John P. Cushman, early 19th century congressman from New York (we recently purchased a collection of books belonging to him and his family). This book does not contain the full signature of Cushman but does have his initials. This appears to be the First American Edition. John P. Cushman (1784-1848) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. He was born in Connecticut and graduated from Yale in 1806. While in law school he married Maria Jones Tallmage, daughter of Revolutionary War Officer (and spy for George Washington during the war) Benjamin Tallmage. Cushman was a Federalist and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing New York's 10th District (1817-1819). He was also a Judge of the Third Circuit Court, 1838-1844. He was a regent of the University of the State of New York (1830-1834) and was the Recorder of Troy, New York (1834-1838).
