Uniformly bound in a half calf 19th century Romantic binding (Empire style), spines richly gilt decorated and gilt letterd and numbered on red morocco labels (top & bottom of spine slightly rubbed; bottom of vol. 2 a trifle damaged; corners and outer edges of sides slightly frayed), marbled end-papers and marbled edges. ¶ A Very rarre classic work on the botany of Plinius the Eldwer, printed in a very limited edition of 50 copies. With author's paraph and justification (#36) on a separated, tipped-in, label. "Antoine Fee served as military pharmacist and operated own pharmacy in Paris before earning his M.D. from Strasbourg (1833) and becoming professor of botany there. He contributed to cryptogamic botany through extensive descriptive study of ferns (1844-66), and work in lichens and cryptogams occuring on medicinal bark. In plant physiology, studied movement in plants, especially as affected by light. Also wrote on plants mentioned in classical literature (i.a.
