London : William Blackwood and Sons, 1872. 1st Edition 5th or later Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First edition sixth printing (edition) dated 1872 in red boards. Hardback grades as good. Book has some minor faults, however the major fault is a missing section from the spine measuring 60x25mm. A portion of this missing binding measuring 60x12 mm is laid in the book. Book has slight lean. Boards have rubbing and marking but the cover design is still reasonably bold. Softened or gently bumped corners. Front joint rubbed, with fraying to head. Front hinge cracked but holding, rear hinge starting. Spine rubbed and bumped to ends. Brown Paste downs and FEPs (front and back) lightly marked. Previous owners notation and name in neat pencil hand to verso of title page. Authors name in same neat pencil written on dedication page. Text block has light toning and dusty top edge. The leaves are generally clean and tidy, without creases. Light spotting though out the book. Apart from the cracks to the hinges, binding is pretty tight and readable. Note we do not use stock images, the book pictured is the book described. A good example of this collectible early SF title. This the sixth printing from 1872. Recognised as a seminal early SF novel, and I found it very readable, as I read the first six chapters whilst doing this listing and would have happily carried on if I had more time. A rare book in the Blackwood imprint, regardless of condition or printing. A volume that would benefit from restoration, certainly it would be a good investment for the collector of early SF.
