Illustrated with woodcuts and ten very nicely handcoloured steel engravings in each volume, all by John Leech. Some soiling to boards, mild edgewear, both volumes missing FFEP. A handsome and solid set with some delightful illustrations. Heavy, special shipping considerations may apply.

She was the second wife, married in 1917. he was made a Marquess in 1921. 20 handcolored steel engravings (full page plates) and many other illustrations. Considerable shelfwear to decorated boards, with corners rubbed, some chipping to spine tips, etc. Writing and picture on boards fairly bright. Inside, some scattered foxing, with most pages clean. Both volumes with weak front inner hinges. Volume 1 preliminary pages detached and need to be tipped in. Overall, good.

Internally fine.<br/><br/> The first editions of both works, of which the Comic History of Rome is rarer. One plate in the History of England is loose, and has evidently been supplied from another copy, while the Royal Oak plate is lacking altogether. Tooley, pp. 161-2.<br/><br/>

Top edges gilt. Suggestion of shelf wear on bottom corners. Minor waterstaining to the edges of the first few pages of Volume I (not affecting text). Serious and not-so-serious students of English history alike will profit from this lovely set. Fans of John Leech will appreciate his 20 coloured steel engravings as well as his dozens of smaller drawings. Ca. 1850 (A'Beckett died in 1856). Just the ticket for someone who is taking life and history far too seriously ! Very heavy set will need extra postage..
