Three solidly-bound volumes in red cloth which is worn and stained in places, all spines discoloured, spine ends and corners bumped and frayed, spine of vol. 1 has a 1.5 inch tear to the cloth, inexpertly repaired, dust and soiling to edges, flourishing ink signatures to the yellow-sided prelim of each volume (Charles B Jago or Iago!?), vol. 1 has an ink inscription to verso of frontispiece portrait of Shakespeare, and shows through at the front; delightful plates by Kenny Meadows, some dated 1845, must have been originally published separately before being bound in, and all have a rounded waterstain to top or bottom margin, and are browned to the edges; many equally delightful black and white illustrations in the text; pages generally in good plus condition, with some browning, particularly those opposite the plates which have offset marginal discolouring; text in double-columns. London: for H. Herringman, and are to be sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders,, 1685. The fourth folio, the last of the 17th-century editions of Shakespeare's works and the most grandly produced, this issue with the imprint naming Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders, the booksellers to whom Herringman had entrusted his retail business. There were three issues, with slightly different imprints. John Macock printed the title page for Herringman's copies, "to be sold by Joseph Knight and Francis Saunders". Robert Roberts printed the title pages for the other issues from a single type setting, with either three or four booksellers named. There is no known precedence among the three issues, but Macock's title is much the rarer of the two settings; the online Shakespeare Census locates thirty-five extant copies, only five in private hands.
