This debut has been called the first Beat novel by a woman. The author, a onetime actress (from the Broadway company of "I Remember Mama"), was the girlfriend of Jack Kerouac for two years, but is noted in her own right as a novelist, memoirist, and editor. Better known as Joyce Johnson (married name).
